One week from today I will be opening for perhaps my favorite artist of all time, in any musical genre, DJ QUIK. It’s really like that.

Where do I even start? Quik’s music dominated my high school soundtrack, for one. Every sunny day. Every lunch break. Every trip to the homies party to get drunk on crap beer. Every shorty I drove back from said party. Quik was there. Rhythm-al-ism to be exact.

Quik should honestly be given royalties every time someone says “west coast” because the music he has made and the persona he embodies is the perfect living and breathing definition of the term. The SoCal electro and p funk sounds he based his early albums off. The smooth pimpish yet furiously annunciated and syncopated rhymes that he shoots from his mouthpiece like a Mack-10. That perm. Dude just makes you feel like you’re in LA when u put on a record. It’s that fact alone that I often have a hard time listening to Quik when it’s cold and gloomy in the 206. It just pisses me off that I’m not driving with the topdown on Sunset Blvd or some shit.

Rhythm-al-ism is the perfect hip-hop album in every sense of the word. The production is completely bananas. Live instrumentation with some of the hottest percussion you will ever hear on wax. Little subtleties in his guitar work and effects on his synths just make you smile and nod like you’ve never heard rap/funk in any incarnation, whether casual listener or complete rap nerd. The RnB influences are many and mostly flawless. Just to pinpoint a few…

That is just one album in a discography that spans over two decades, with very little filler and mostly killer. Not to mention his various collaborations with one my other ‘top 5′ musicians, Raphael Saadiq.

In short, don’t you dare fucking miss him play in Seattle next week.

This evening I have the honor of spinning my first engagement at the Seattle Art Museum in the Theaster Gates Listening Room. It is part of the free 1st Thursday events they run every month and I will be playing from 6pm to 9pm.

It will be a classy affair, no doubt, and the collection of records that I will get to choose from is vast and well curated. This room is an exhibit in and of itself, containing a beautiful record shelf carved out of the far wall and a dj setup fit for a king (throne included).

I hope this is the first of many occasions I get to spin at SAM, seeing as they are known to throw some of the best parties in town.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 9 months (or you don’t live in Seattle) The Woods is one of my favorite places to play in the entire universe. It is a 3rd story loft space that has an energy unlike any other I’ve rocked. The crowd is always there to dance, and they love all of my favorite shit, like 90s hip hop, rnb, classic boogie, disco and funk. Drinks are stiff, security is on point, DJ booth is elevated (and therefore hard for drunk idiots to get to), and the vibe is always right.

This Saturday I will be joining my compadre Blueyedsoul for what is sure to be another night to remember in the “disco treehouse.” Join us, won’t you??

Well I’m back and finally fully recovered from a week long jaunt in the music and taco filled oasis that is Austin, Texas. Needless to say, it was an amazing trip and I can’t wait to go back!

I had the privilege of DJing some top notch parties and was able to see some of my favorite groups perform in intimate settings. Met some amazing new friends and networked like a champ. SXSW really is the best mix of business and pleasure a music industry head could have. Of course, the weather was a nice change from the unseasonal Seattle snow. Tacos, brisket, shrimp, bbq, soul food, ect. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

Is it already that time again!?

SWSX is easily my favorite getaway every year. By the time March rolls around I’m getting realllllly tired of 4 straight months of grey skies and rainy, cold weather in Seattle. Also, it just so happens to be the best mix of business and pleasure anyone in the music industry could ever ask for. I’ve seen some unforgettable shows and had the opportunity to meet some of my favorite artists and djs in the most casual of atmospheres, which allows you to actually make a connection and create a foundation for a working relationship. That is so rare, and one of the best parts of the festival. Not to mention the wonderful combination of BBQ and sunshine.

Anyways, I’m stoked to get down there and I’ve put together a nice little lineup of gigs and parties to warrant the weeklong stay.
