First up is “Blurred Lines” from Robin Thicke. Easily my favorite new club song and a great homage to one of my favorite singers of all time, Marvin Gaye. That said, I had to add the OG vocals to “Got To Give It Up”, plus T.I. and Robin’s verses thrown in for good measure. Added a nice intro/outro for my fellow djs.

Next we have a refix of Justin Timberlake’s “Strawberry Bubblegum” off of his 20/20 Experience LP that I made alongside the homie/neighbor @WD4D. Sounds like a very pleasant day at the beach on some far off planet with your dream girl by your side. Great for a sunny day or a night in with a special someone.

Inspired by my upcoming trip to Austin, Houston & NOLA, I decided to put together a mix of my favorite southern cadillac rap songs. I have always appreciated the slow tempo, 808s, soul samples and organ heavy production favored by artists from the “3rd coast” and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to put it all together in a proper listening experience from front to back and side to side. I rung in the new year at the Tacoma Art Museum with my Integral DJs fam Marc Sense for their Studio 54 party and had a blast spinning all classic disco, funk and boogie. It’s not too often you get to spin in a museum let alone get to play really good music on a big night such as NYE. All around a great booking and we had that place jumpin from start to finish. 

Next up was a top notch event for SightLife at the brand new Seattle Museum of History and Industry aka MOHAI in South Lake Union. This new space is nothing short of amazing. Not only a great place to have an event, but a fantastic museum coving all of Seattle’s history in a beautiful art deco style building that was once a Naval Armory. I think I was one of the first DJs to play in the new facility and it sure was a treat. I hope I get the chance to play there again soon.

I thought spinning at MOHAI was going to be untouchable, but then the following week I was able to play at McCaw Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, at Seattle Center for the Washington State Wine Awards and was completely blown away. Such an amazing space. Our event took place in the lobby/foyer area, which is massive, and houses some eye catching sculptures and artwork, as well as some  magnificent views of the indoor and outdoor architectural features. This was definitely a very cool addition to my DJ resume and definitely will be a highlight of my year.

Lastly, I wrapped up my January event calendar with a wedding at the world famous Edgewater Hotel on the Seattle Waterfront. The Edgewater was made famous by being the preferred hotel of the most famous Rock N Roll acts of the 60s and 70s, such as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I’m sure if those walls could talk, they’d have some very interesting tales to tell. The event took place in the Olympic Ballroom on the top floor overlooking Elliot Bay, with views of downtown and the ferries going by. It was quite majestic and very Seattle. The perfect way to end a pretty packed month of events!

I will preface the list with this: 2012 was an EXCELLENT year for music. Not only for the overall quality, but for the vast amounts of new groups rising up into the public consciousness through the web to make serious waves and put the industry on notice. Music is becoming music again, not just a commodity to be evaluated like a stock. Artists are blowing up overnight – some warranted, some not – and the playing field is becoming more even everyday between independents and major labels – special shout out to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis!

I paid for more digital music this year than ever before (I always buy vinyl, used and new) mainly because it was worth my money. I want to support these artists and make sure that the music I play and enjoy – whether in the club or at home – continues to thrive. I highly recommend you do the same in 2013.
